Maryland Volleyball Beats Troy, Falls to LSU on Day One of Tournament

Terrapins Open Season with 1-1 Record

The Maryland volleyball team opened its 2023 season with a 1-1 record at the LSU Tournament in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday.

Maryland defeated Troy in four sets (25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17) in the opener.

The Terrapins then fell to host LSU in four sets (25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20) in the nightcap.

Balanced Attack Leads Maryland Past Troy

Maryland was led by a balanced attack against Troy.

Sophomore outside hitter Laila Ricks led the Terrapins with 15 kills, while senior middle blocker Tara Cole added 12 kills.

Junior outside hitter Erin Adams and sophomore middle blocker Avarie Powell each chipped in with 10 kills.

LSU Rallies Past Maryland

LSU rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Maryland in the second match of the day.

The Tigers hit .306 as a team, led by senior outside hitter Taylor Bannister's 18 kills.

Maryland was led by Cole's 13 kills and Ricks' 12 kills.

Next Up

Maryland will wrap up the LSU Tournament on Saturday with a match against Nicholls at 1 p.m. CT.

The Terrapins will then return home to College Park, Maryland, to host the Maryland Invite next weekend.
