Rome, Italy - Reigning European champions Italy suffered a shock defeat in their opening game of the 2024 UEFA European Championship, losing 1-0 to Albania.
Italy's usually impenetrable defense was breached just 23 seconds into the match, with Albania's Myrto Uzuni scoring the fastest goal in the tournament's history. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Italy was unable to find an equalizer.
The defeat ended Italy's 10-game unbeaten run at the European Championships, dating back to 2016. Italy had won seven and drawn three of those matches.
Meanwhile, Spain enjoyed a more comfortable start to their campaign, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Croatia in Tbilisi. Goals from Álvaro Morata, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Ferran Torres gave Spain a convincing win.
Both Spain and Italy remain undefeated in Group B after two matches. They will face off in a crucial clash on Wednesday, with the winner likely to secure a place in the knockout stages.
