Earthquakes in India: A Surge in Activity
Increased Seismic Activity in 2023
According to data collected by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, there has been a noticeable increase in earthquake activity in the year 2023.
Activation of the Almora Fault
One significant factor contributing to this surge is the activation of the Almora fault in Western Nepal. This geological feature has been responsible for several moderate-to-large earthquakes this year.
Data and Analysis
The NCS provides detailed information on earthquakes occurring during the month on their website www.seismo.gov.in. Table 1 of their publication "Earthquakes of M5.0 occurred during March 2023 within India and its neighbourhood" presents data on tremors of magnitude 5.0 and above.
