World heavyweight champion Larry Holmes has been forced to retire from boxing after suffering a detached retina in his left eye. The injury occurred during a fight against challenger Tim Witherspoon on October 2, 1980, in Las Vegas. Holmes was knocked down in the 7th round and the fight was stopped by the referee. The injury is a serious one and requires surgery. Holmes is expected to make a full recovery, but he will not be able to box again.
Holmes is one of the most successful heavyweight boxers of all time. He won the WBC heavyweight championship in 1978 and defended it 19 times. He also won the WBA heavyweight championship in 1980. Holmes retired with a record of 69-3, with 44 knockouts. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
